How to build a good boat for "Sink or Float Activity?
My younger brother in 2nd grade, is a "sink or Float activity / competition where you must build a 6 "x 6" boat (basically a structure that can float, it is not necessary or form one) and pictures Small is placed on it with the boat that can hold more than be the winner. Does anyone know what type of structure and materials of the best would be to support the more weight? Some restrictions are that you can not use pre-made materials (such as a Tupperware jug of milk) and should be 6 "x 6" size, or that does not fit into the bucket. We have built a small raft of straw wrapped in foil that works quite well, and I tried to pipe roll of toilet paper for paper usage make a model "Pontoon" flotation device, but wet. All ideas are welcome. Thank you.
I've done this before using the paper. It would a little more difficult because you have to do is 6 "x6", but I think it's possible. Aluminum foil is durable, lightweight and very flexible. The winner of the competition in my class that was built a rectangle whose sides are very high that way, even if the boat sank under the weight (of the coins used in place of tables), it was techincally shipwreck, as it has no water. The hardest part is bending / corners to ensure that water can be in, but it is possible, my science demonstrated entire Class 5 of 6 models are waterproof and can contain objects. Maybe you could even use the packing tape (broadband is very clear that strong) to adjust angles. You must keep the water, but they add weight to the OT for the boat. Good luck!
